Community Service
AARP Chapter 421 exists, not only to serve its members, but also to serve deserving segments of the surrounding community. That community includes Catonsville, southwest Baltimore County, and portions of the Metropolitan Baltimore area.
That community service takes place in two ways:
- Donating money acquired through fund-raising programs
- Helping worthy people in other ways
Fund-Raising and Donations
Our chapter has a long tradition of raising funds, from within its membership, and donating monetary contributions to worthy organizations voted on by its membership. The fund-raising goes on throughout the year, and the contributions typically occur near the end of the year.
Other Activities
In addition, the chapter members often agree to help the community in other ways.
One such activity is the collection of material goods for donation to pertinent organizations.
For example, at chapter meetings we have collected nonperishable foods for donation to the Catonsville Emergency Food Ministries (now known as the CEFM Network) for use in that charity's humanitarian efforts.
Each member brings a contribution to our monthly meetings.
Then, after each meeting, a few of us drive the collection over to the food pantry.
In 2011, at our nine business meetings, we collected 213 pounds of food.
