A Look Into My Life and Activities

Why Do This?

Over the years I've been a volunteer with various organizations. Also, over the years I've enjoyed writing. More recently I've explored the uses of a computer. Put these three things together and I came up with the idea of setting up Websites for organizations with which I've been involved.

AARP

Although I joined AARP -- the national organization -- after I turned 50, it wasn't until I took early retirement in 1988, at age 58, that I could participate with the local chapter. I've held various positions, and now I've set up this Website for Catonsville Chapter 421.

BCASCO

The Baltimore County Association of Senior Citizens Organizations is an umbrella group of AARP chapters, senior centers, golden age clubs, some businesses, and others who are interested in senior issues. I became involved through my AARP chapter, have served on the Board of Directors, and now have set up this BCASCO Website.

Previous Websites

A while ago I belonged to two other organizations that were right up my alley, so I set up Websites for each of them. Unfortunately both have suspended operation for now. They were:

The Golden Radio Buffs of Maryland. The GRB was a club catering to fans of old-time radio, the golden era of radio, mainly the 1940's but taking in also the Thirties and Fifties. Some of us were alive back them, so we remembered those days. Other club members were younger; they didn't live through that era of live broadcasts but they came to appreciate it via recordings of shows that featured comedy, drama, mystery, music, and other aspects of the "Theatre of the Imagination."
The Maryland Press Club. The members of the MPC were mostly working and retired members of the professional media -- newspapers, magazines, radio, television -- plus related areas such as advertising and public relations. I joined because at the time I was the Communications Coordinator for AARP Maryland. I wanted to learn what I could and also network with people who might be good to know.

I set up the above four Websites as part of my volunteering, but they are only part of the story. Let's step back and take a broader view of what I've been up to. Take a look at my volunteering over the years.
